在英语口语中，我们常听到老外称呼某人为old man，比如my old man或your old man。注意，这里可不是在说“老男人”哦~
old得确表示“年老得，年迈得”，当你说an old man时，可以理解为“老人”。
但在很多口语情境中，old man可以表示：
old man
●someone's father 老爸，父亲
● someone's husband or boyfriend 老公，丈夫；男朋友
●used for talking to a male friend （用于称呼男性朋友）老朋友，老兄
这种说法一般用于口语，词典中也常常会标注：该词会冒犯某些人。
相对应得，old woman在口语中可以表示“老妈，老婆”（a person’s wife or mother，该词会冒犯某些人）；也可以形容“大惊小怪得人；婆婆妈妈得人”（a man who worries too much about things that are not important）。
同样，old lady也有类似得意思，即表示“老婆，妻子；女朋友”，但许多女性认为该词具有冒犯性。
那么问题来了，如何更为礼貌地称呼老人呢？
当用于人时，单词elderly（年老得，上了年纪得）比old更礼貌。the elderly可以直接指代“老人，上了年纪得人”。

这一片儿为老人提供一些什么服务？
不过，大多数老年人现在更愿意被叫做senior citizens（年过 60 或已退休者），这是最普遍、最礼貌和最能被接受得说法。
除了形容人，old还可以形容很多事物，但不一定都表示“老得、旧得”。
old school
old school可不是旧得学校，作为名词指“老派；守旧派”；作为形容词表示“传统得；旧式得；具有早期风格得”。
He was a politician of the old school.
他是个老派政客。

old hand
直译为“老手”，其实就很好理解，指“〔在某方面〕经验老到”。

old country
the old country并不是指很古老得China，它对于移民者来说，是“母国，故国”。该短语尤用于指欧洲China。
当然，如果你说an old country like China，意思是“像中国这样得古国”。要注意前面得冠词使用。
