Hua Tuo (华陀) was an outstanding medical scientist in Chinese history. He lived in the Eastern Han Dynasty and died in the year 208 AD.
It is said that two prefecture magistrates, Ni Xun (倪寻) and Li Yan (李延) went to see Hua Tuo. It also happened that both officials were suffering from a headache and both were running a fever.
After examining them, Hua Tuo said to Ni Xun, 'Ni Xun, you need to take some laxatives.'
And Hua Tuo turned to Li Yan, 'But you need to take this, a medicine to increase perspiration.'
The two patients were puzzled. Ni Xun asked, 'Why do you give us different prescriptions when we have the same symptoms?'
Hua Tuo explained, 'Your problem is due to an improper diet while Li Yan is suffering from the outside cold. Although you have similar symptoms, the root causes are different. Hence I need to give you the different remedies.'
The two officials took the medicine accordingly, and both of them recovered the next day.
People summed up Hua Tuo's approach of prescribing remedies in the idiom duì zhèng xià yào (对症下药). Duì means based on. Zhèng is the symptoms. Xià means give or write down and Yào is the prescription or medicine.
The phrase is used to mean choosing problem-solving methods appropriate for the specific situation. It is still frequently used nowadays when people want to say let's find the correct way to solve the problem.
