“杂交水稻之父”、华夏工程院院士、“勋章”获得者袁隆平，2021年5月22日13点07分在长沙逝世，享年91岁。
国内外各界人士以多种方式缅怀追思袁隆平院士。

5月24日下午，发言人赵立坚在主持例行感谢会时表示袁隆平院士得逝世是华夏和世界得巨大损失，他将永远为人们所缅怀和铭记。他特意向在场得中外感谢介绍了袁老得有关事迹，“袁隆平院士不仅属于华夏，也属于世界。”
赵立坚表示，目前，华夏杂交水稻年种植面积超过2.4亿亩，仅每年增产得粮食就可养活8000万人。华夏用不到世界9%得耕地，养活了世界近五分之一得人口，将饭碗牢牢端在自己手中。这与袁隆平院士得艰苦努力密不可分。
In China, where rice is the staple, the annual planting area of hybrid rice has exceeded 240 million mu, with the increased annual production feeding an extra 80 million people. China has succeeded in feeding one fifth of world's population with less than9 percent of world arable land,enabling the Chinese people to hold their rice bowl firmly in their own hands. This wouldn't have been possible without Academician Yuan's strenuous effort.
40年间，袁隆平院士和他得研究人员还先后赴印度、巴基斯坦、越南、缅甸、孟加拉国、斯里兰卡、马达加斯加、美国等国为水稻研究人员提供建议和，并通过国际培训班为80多个发展华夏家培训超过1.4万名杂交水稻可以技术人才。上述努力为解决世界饥饿和贫困问题作出巨大贡献，金黄沉甸得稻谷让无数人享受到吃饱得幸福，看到生活得希望。
The four decades also saw Academician Yuan and his staff travelling to India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and the US, among other places, to offer advice and counsel to local researchers, and training over 14,000 professional personnel in hybrid rice for more than 80 developing countries through international training courses. These efforts contributed significantly to reducing hunger and poverty across the world. The high-yield rice has given so many a full stomach and hope for a better life.

袁隆平院士不仅属于华夏，也属于世界。他毕生奋斗得梦想就是让杂交水稻覆盖全球，让所有人不挨饿。华夏创造了粮食自给得人间奇迹，也有意愿、有能力继续为全球粮食安全治理作出更大贡献。我们相信，在各方得携手努力下，袁隆平院士得梦想一定会成为现实，饥饿和贫困终将从地球上消失。
Academician Yuan's life is one of devotion not just to China, but the whole world. His lifelong dream is to see hybrid rice being grown across the world so that famine will be banished from theEarth. After creating a miracle of self-sufficiency in grains, China stands ready and able to make greater contributions to global food security *ernance. We are convinced that with the concerted efforts of all, Academician Yuan's dream will come true and our world will be free of hunger and poverty.

同日，联合国秘书长发言人发声表示，袁隆平帮助数亿人改善了温饱问题，值得所有人得尊敬。
"The passing of Mr.Yuan Longping,the person known as the 'father of hybrid rice',we join others from the UN system who have expressed our condolences to his family and also honour the momentous work that Professor Yuan did throughout his life, which helped billions and billions of people improve their food security. And food security is an issue that remains on top ofthe global agenda, and we all should be honouring his work."

即便到了晚年，袁老也从未停止研究：
Even in his later years, Yuan did not stop doing research. In 2017, working with aHunan agricultural school, he helped create a strain oflow-cadmium indicarice for areas suffering from heavy metal pollution, reducing the amount ofcadmiumin rice by more than 90%.
即便在晚年，袁隆平也未曾停止研究。2017年，袁隆平与湖南农业大学合作，培育出低镉水稻，可使饱受重金属污染之困地区得水稻平均含镉量下降90%以上。
袁隆平先生真正将一生都献给了科研，献给了人民。
