Which is better for children’s education: 9-month study and 3-month vacation or 3-month study and 1-month vacation?
There are two typical ways to arrange students’ study and vacations. One is to give them a 3-month holiday after 9-month study. The other is a short break of 1 month after the study for 3 months. I believe the short periods of break and study are better for children’s education.
Firstly, short time study and regular holidays can help children concentrate on study without being stressed out. If they study for 9 months they are more likely to find the long semester tedious and unbearable. After all, children lack the strong self-control and long term concentration. What adults find natural may be unacceptable to them. This may be the reason why some private schools in China give more holidays to students every year. And students in these schools usually have a better performance than their counterparts in the public schools.
Moreover, children will develop their hobbies when the study load is not too heavy for them. Three breaks every year offer them enough chances to do some activities or receive some training according to their own interest. Hobbies developed according to their own interest will benefit them for the whole life. I know some friends who have the good hobbies of, say, keeping a dairy, collecting stamps or insect specimens, or doing sports. They told me that they began these hobbies from childhood. Under great pressure, however, students will have less energy and motivation to develop their hobbies.
Of course, short term study may cause some troubles in arranging the teaching activities or designing the curricula. But there are some solutions such as assigning the proper amount of homework so that students won’t stop learning in holidays, or giving periodic tests so that students will make the best of the shorter term study.
Overall, the advantages of short time study and breaks outweigh their disadvantages. Seeing the good performance, and all-round development of the students, we will be more convinced of the benefits of such an arrangement.
